Szombathely

"Hungary is poor in natural resources - Hungary is rich in natural resources. Two radically different statements, yet both are true."

 Greetings from Europe,
so to keep my peeps updated back in Ozland this post is going to brief, but in English ;-) (Most Estonians can understand English anyway)
So last week i spent in little town called Szombathely that is located in West Hungary close to the border with Austria. Its apparently the oldest town in Hungary (at least in West Hungary) and has about 80 000 people. It is an university town, I guess like Tartu in Estonia.
So just to give you idea of what i've been up to here I'll show you some photos and short comments to each.

Any place is as good as the people you meet there.... well they (on the picture) were not locals, but still this statement counts here as well....it was a great bunch of people that I'm happy i met...:-)

Local garden bed flowers...in the city center...

The city square - fo ter ( in Hungarian)...

City square again - on the corner there was a great bakery with awful coffee...

Sopron - local (classic) beer....named after the town between Szombathely and Vienna....was good one!

At the conference dinner....

Let's meet some weeds!....Behind me is Heracleum mantegazzianum  (giant hogweed) after flowering that had escaped from the old castle park of Vep...(locality)

Phytolacca americana  (American pokeweed) has been planted as ornamental plant in Hungary.

The (in)famous Scotch broom  Cytisus scorparius

Still life...in Orseg Folk Monument group in Szalafo-Pityerszer...

The main gate of St. George's Benedictine Abbey Church built in Romanesque style in the 13th century ..

The first Hungarian "invasion biologist"....:-)

That's shortly about Szombathely....next post might be about adventures in London and Tenerife ;-)

cheers
mwah!

p.s i used the information from booklets when describing photos...i couldn't possibly remember all the names of places and etc ;-)

Ohoo. What are the existing/nonexisting natural resources in Hungary - weeds?
Do weeds invade rather places disturbed by humans as they do here down under?
You indeed look good and not jetlagged. Thanks for update :*

"Its richness is in primeval flora and fauna that have been preserved in a number of grasslands, fens, marshes, flood plains, forests and pastures which have been left almost intact"....sounds like Estonia, heh? :-)
Yes, weeds are mostly ornamentals and spread into disturbed areas...;-)

I see you were fully hungarized :D and indeed it sounds like Estonia but dont you forget that in your country everything is "most unique" on top of those adjectives :)

Let us hope that we will stay wild in Eastern Europe. Today I read an article about English company chopping down the trees in primeval Bialowieza forest :/ Money, money money.
